A non-linear viscoelastic viscoplastic model for the behaviour of polyester fibres ArchiMer
Chailleux, Emmanuel; Davies, Peter.
In this study the macroscopic analysis proposed by Schapery has been applied to model the non-linear viscoelastic and viscoplastic behaviour of polyester fibres. First, a special non-contact extensometry method has been developed in order to measure the fibre response without affecting the behaviour of these extremely anisotropic fibres. An accelerated identification method has then been developed. This enables a unique and independent set of parameters to be determined, which separate the reversible and non-reversible mechanisms responsible for measured strains. The model prediction for an arbitrary loading sequence corresponds closely to the measured strains. The model has been applied here at the yarn level but can equally well be used to predict rope...

Long-Term Mechanical Behavior of Aramid Fibers in Seawater ArchiMer
Derombise, Guillaume; Chailleux, Emmanuel; Forest, Bertrand; Riou, Luc; Lacotte, Nicolas; Van Schoors, L. Vouyovitch; Davies, Peter.
Aramid fibers are today proposed in ropes and cables for marine applications. As these highly crystalline materials are loaded in tension for a longer period in seawater, their long-term mechanical behavior has to be understood. However, the response is time-dependent and exhibits a nonlinear effect with stress. In this study, two types of aramid fibers are studied: Twaron and Technora. Mechanical properties are measured using static tensile tests and creep-recovery tests. A nonlinear viscoelastic-viscoplastic model, based on the Schapery formulation, allows discriminating between the instantaneous and the time-dependent response as well as the reversible and nonreversible phenomena (plasticity). First, this procedure allows the overall mechanical behavior...

Tensile fatigue behaviour of PBO fibres ArchiMer
Davies, Peter; Bunsell, A. R.; Chailleux, Emmanuel.
Poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) fibres are finding increasing applications on account of their exceptional stiffness and strength. This article presents results from tests on single PBO filaments, to characterize their intrinsic behaviour under quasi-static and cyclic tensile loading. Scanning electron microscopy is used to show the fibrillation mechanism leading to failure. Results are compared to data for polyester, aramid and high modulus polyethylene fibres. PBO fibres show shorter fatigue lifetimes than the other fibres when maximum stress is expressed as a percentage of quasi-static break load, but the absolute stress values applied are much higher for an equivalent lifetime.
